Our Philosophy

Good wooden goods are made to last

With respect for the many lives nurtured by nature, KINARI creates wooden goods to be cherished for years to come.

Without being bound to any one material or method, we pursue craftsmanship that brings out the best in each material, from trees that have lived for a century to supple, strong bamboo.

Timeless

Simple, timeless and universally beautiful design.

Universal

A feel in the hand loved by people around the world, of every background and generation.

Authentic

Authentic products whose value deepens the longer you use them.

Contents

  1. A discerning eye that listens to the material
  2. In harmony with skilled artisans across Japan
  3. Quality and handwork for everyday life
  4. A cycle that wastes nothing of each life
  5. Thorough aftercare, to grow old together

A discerning eye that listens to the material

For each product, we carefully select the most suitable material from across Japan and bring out its most beautiful character.

Our woodworking begins with the trained eye of Mr. Higashide, the only craftsman in Japan carrying on kobiki (traditional hand-sawing of logs), a technique dating back to the Nara period. Drawing on experience with tens of thousands of logs, he accurately reads the inside of the wood and selects timber free of irregularities, preventing warping and cracking in the finished product.

In harmony with skilled artisans across Japan

To make products without compromise, we work with artisans across Japan who share KINARI's philosophy.

Blending time-honored techniques with a modern sensibility, and making the fine adjustments only handwork allows, we pursue a comfort that settles naturally into your hand.

Finishing by a craftsman

Quality and handwork for everyday life

Because these are tools for everyday use, we value peace of mind and durability above all.

From the place of origin to your hands, every product passes through multiple rigorous inspections, and we package each one with care, down to how beautiful it looks the moment the box is opened as a gift.

A MANAITA being taken out of its box

A cycle that wastes nothing of each life

We never waste the finite resources that nature has given us.

Even offcuts from production are given new life in other forms, as we practice sustainable craftsmanship that carries Japan's rich nature into the future.

Thorough aftercare, to grow old together

KINARI products are not disposable. They are tools for life that grow old with you, care after care.

Scratches and changes in color are cherished signs of the daily life you have shared. In addition to your own everyday care, we offer full maintenance by our craftsmen.

MANAITA resurfacing

When knife marks or dark stains start to bother you, a craftsman will shave a thin layer off the surface, bringing back a smooth, like-new finish and a rich scent.

Re-lacquering chopsticks

Chopsticks gradually wear with daily use. When a craftsman carefully reapplies the urushi lacquer, they regain their beautiful luster and gentle feel on the lips.

Resurfacing

True to our concept of Authentic, products whose value deepens with long use, we want our tools to grow dearer the more you use them and to be passed down through generations.

We will be with you in your daily life for many years to come.

Crafting process

Every KINARI product is carefully finished one by one by skilled craftsmen, who read the character of each material through every step from selecting the wood to processing and shaping.

Selection of materials

For our products, we carefully select two woods native to Japan to suit each use, hinoki cypress and Japanese wild cherry (yamazakura), paying attention even to where they are grown.

FAQ

Answers to common questions about care, resurfacing requests, returns and exchanges.

Does each product vary?

This product is made from natural wood. Each piece therefore varies in grain and color, and may show small knots formed as the tree grew or slight variations in tone. None of these affect quality or hygiene.

We kindly ask that you purchase with an understanding of the characteristics of natural wood. As a rule, we are unable to accept exchanges for reasons inherent to natural materials, such as grain, color, or knots.

Are there care instructions for each product?

We provide everyday use and care instructions covering all our products.
