Quality of Wood
KINARI's timber is chosen by the discerning eye of the only "kobiki" sawyers still working in Japan. The kobiki trade reaches back before the Nara period: specialists who cut enormous logs with the oga, a large rip saw.
Years of handling thousands of logs give them an uncommon ability to read the inside of a tree. From look, touch and sound together they judge the run of the grain, the moisture content, slight tendencies in the wood and any sign of internal cracking, and place the quality of the material precisely.
Wood is a living natural material that keeps breathing after it is felled. Poor timber warps and cracks more readily, and its beauty does not last.
That is why KINARI holds to a single principle — build the quality in at the material stage — and it is what makes the beauty and the feel of these pieces last.
Japanese Craftsmanship
Every KINARI piece is finished one at a time by skilled artisans who read the character of the material as they work. They bring out the grain and the texture, check the feel and the fine points of the form, and refine it with handwork no machine alone can reproduce. KINARI also works closely with woodworking shops across Japan, drawing on the technique and knowledge each region has handed down. By making the most of what each workshop does best in cutting and finishing, we hold to consistent quality and close tolerances without losing what makes the wood appealing.
Making things with local workshops is not simply a matter of borrowing their skills. It carries traditional technique and regional manufacturing forward. As the artisans' craft passes to the next generation and local industry continues, the culture of wood itself is preserved and cultivated.
